Julie Doiron: Woke Myself Up

Sound — 8
"Woke Myself Up" is the 2007 release from Maritime singer/songwriter Julie Doiron. Since the breakup of 'Eric's Trip' Julie has collaborated with many artists, and released a vast amount of material as a solo musician. The album reveals the experience gained and is her most mature release yet. The album consists of fast paced electric jams, slower ballads, and raaw acoustic numbers. There is a personal feel to the songs, making the listener think she is in the same room. If the listener is not attentive the album seems bland and songs blur into eachother.

Lyrics — 8
The lyrics are simple yet inviting. The songs range from loves, friends and past experiences. She displays a great vocal performance, even though some consider her singing harsh. The album has a non-studio quality to it, something that adds to the listening experience.

Overall Impression — 8
This is a very good indie album, and an artist worth checking out. For people outside of Eastern Canada, her music is easily available on the internet. "Don't Wannabe / Liked by You", a rocking electric song, "Me and My Friend", a tender acoustic number, and "No More", a pop song similar to an artist like Feist, are stand out tracks. Overall this is a good purchase and a great recommendation!
