Katy Perry: One of the Boys

Katy Perry's music is fun-pop, similar to what Right Said Fred was in the '90s and Samantha Fox was in the '80s. She has a cheeky attitude liken to Kate Nash, vocal textures reminiscent of Avril Lavigne, and catchy melodic hooks relatable to Gwen Stefani. Her latest release One Of The Boys is tantamount to a chick-flick for the ears looking at people and life from a female perspective. The title track is sunny and upbeat and sets the cheery school-girl mood for the album. These are tunes that are heavy in entertainment value like Waking Up In Vegas and Hot 'N' Cold. People can relate to the songs even if they never experienced the situations reflected in the lyrics. The pop confections are distinguishable from song to song honing a new wave tint on If You Can Afford Me, an easy-going jocular swagger along Ur So Gay, and a winking cabaret style through I Kissed A Girl. Perry does inject ballad forms into the album like the soft yokes of Fingerprints, which bring out the soothing textures of her vocals showing another side of herself besides the part that likes to jest with people. It's an album the you can have fun with at parties, amusement parks, or for those moments when you need a quick pick-me-up or some comedy relief.

Lyrics — 8
Perry's lyrics can be serious and thoughtful like in Fingerprints, but for the most part, she shows a lighter side to her character like in the lyrics for Ur So Gay. The words evoke laughter from it's listener with verses like I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf / While jacking off listening to Mozart / You bitch and moan about LA / Wishing you were in the rain reading Hemingway / You don't eat meat / And drive electrical cars / You're so indie rock it's almost an art / You need SPF 45 just to stay alive / You're so gay and you don't even like boys. The meaning in her words are apparent and you can't help but memorize the words to entire songs, because the thoughts come right out of real life or at least what you would like to say in real life.

Overall Impression — 8
Katy Perry's One Of The Boys is one of the most fun albums to arrive. It is right up there with last year's release from Lily Allen. Perry has the girlish purr of Kylie Minogue minus the neo-disco glow of electro-pop. Sure, fun-pop has a reputation for producing pop-tarts, but sometimes being silly is a good remedy for being in a slump. It gives people that boost when they are in a bad mood. One Of The Boys may be the new guilty pleasure for people, and the new standard for chick-flick based music.

I'm not entirely sure what demographic this album applies to since there are tons of sexually oriented themes yet the album is so very pop-ish that it would seem it would be like by children, or mainstream music lovers. I gave this album a chance and i see how it's meant to be about a care free fun happy go lucky etc idea, but i think this just adds to the garbage we hear on the radio. this is a person who took selling sex too far by making most of the songs sex oriented. Just another addition to the decline of musical talent and taste. A sad day for music... If people wanted something sexual then they would watch porn, or have sex with another person. truly a pathetic album

It was a sad day in music when you showed the world your lame narrow minded thoughts. I personally dont listen to this type of music, but props to her. It's creative, catchy not to mention she's hot. It's different. I dig it. i wouldnt buy the album though.

    Christianity can be sexy.

it also takes talent to shit standing on top of a toilet, but I wouldn't recommend it

why the hell is she on ultimate-guitar this is supposed to be like a guitar/band/rock-based website.

it may be music, and it may be pop music, but its horrible pop music... the Beatles was a pop band. panic at the disco is a crap band. like i said, yea its music, but its horrible in some/most people's opinions, and there is little talent in that band.

When that one song of hers came on, I was flipping through channels and as I was moseying on by MTV (I hate the network), I hear the chorus, and I smiled a shocked, happy surprise smile. Then I listened/watched the whole video. Hawt.

I usually don't say anything... But I was not impressed with this album or review. It's just... too... demographically targeted.

This girl isn't hot, even if her face has been digitally mastered on the cover. And, I'm sick of these pre-teen albums.

Finally, someone with a bit of an open mind here. Don't get me wrong, the majority of my music taste consists of artists under the rock genre in some shape or form, but people writing comments about how this album shouldn't be on UG just because it's considered pop music is ridiculous. A guitar is an instrument, and can be played in any type of music, and btw it doesn't say anywhere that UG is a website for rock music only. >_< I love Katy Perry personally, she's fun! We need fun! And I don't care what other people think! =]

Exactly, there is much worse...Some people like it, some don't. Yes, UG is a guitar site, but its their site, they can, and will review what they want to be honest. If you dont like the review, why click on it?

Dont know why this is here, but if she is so into sex sells, i'll give her a dollar to blow me. Because a blowjob would be much more pleasing than this album.

She reminds me of a young Aguilera, with a bit more of a sense of humour.... And a serious knowledge of what's gonna sell the album, by the sounds of the song titles and videos...

One day I was sitting around the house, and the T.V. was on MuchMusic, and the video for "I Kissed A Girl" came on. I swear to God, I thought it was porn. But come on. Who the hell writes a song about kissing a girl? That's gotta be one of the easiest demographics to sell to. Not to mention that fact that the video was just half-naked women spinning around. I mean, that's great, but I could get more explicit action by typing "hot chicks" into google.

and worst of all, review was by UG Team. ugh. come on guys. just put up an old megadeth album review, or in rainbows review, or something else; no need to resort to drastic measures like this.
