Sound: As a first solo album after succesful years with the world-famous Dire Straits, guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler shows that his talent in composing is all but over. 14 original tracks are nicely compiled in this CD, all carefully composed and furbished. Impressive is the way Knopfler switched to a different personal style than his previous work. Many consider this album to be a modern masterpiece, garnished with tremendous tunes and music. // 8

Lyrics: Although Knopfler doesn't have a high pitch, he makes it up with amazing lyrics, beautifully sung with his low chanting voice. What puts him apart, as it did with his other works, is how the lyrics comply well with the atmosphere of the tracks. As his history of composing movie soundtracks agrees, that shouldn't surprise many. From a dying soldier under Napoleon to a signature-fan in the cold, he reaches all levels of the listener sharply. His true musical spirit can be seen through the beautiful words. // 10

Overall Impression: A comparison with other artists is hard to make, because of the positive reason that his style is unique, as is his pinching guitar playing. Using his guitar as a second high-pitch voice, he baffles you again and again while intertwining both the music and the lyrics. This is, in my opinion, a must-have album, certainly for people planning to write their own songs. He exploits several different styles and techniques and masters them excellent. I can recall no negative things about this album, as it is far better than I even expected, which was already on a certain level. All together, taken in mind that this album exists for over a decade now, this is album which connects you amazingly with his style. Today, and for many years to come. // 9
