This is the 4th and final single from the contreversial "St. Anger". It also has live performances of "The Four Horsemen", "Damage Inc", "Leaper Messiah", "Motorbreath", "Ride the Lightning" and "Hit the Lights". The song itself is the higlight of "St. Anger", with curching riffs and awesome drumming. The live shows are what you would expect from the thrash giants: Intense and exciting with even better singing and riffing than the already astounding record equivelents. Kirk Hammet proves himself worthy as a rhythm player matching everythin James Hetfeild could do in every song. Rob Trujillo is proving himself to be a worthy Metallica bass player, easily eclipsing Jason Newstead and almost matching Cliff Burton. Lars uses less drums than he does to record songs but he still proves he is the best drummer in the world with more pounding beats by the little goblin type person from Denmark. James Hetfeild is still the mighty performer he was "back in the day". His stage presence is still above any front man ever as is his interaction with the crowd.
Lyrics — 10
"Some Kind Of Monster" is a song about the problems Metallica had during the making on "St. Anger" in which the band were on the brink of splitting up over and thats probably why they named the film after this song. James Hetfiled is singing better than ever (bar "Master Of Puppets") on this song. The Best of the live lyrics come from the two "Master of Puppets" songs, Damage Inc and Leper Messiah, proving that the greatest album ever is still a massive marker on any show they play.
Overall Impression — 10
Overall it is the best Metallica single ever because it has the best mix of old (Four Horsemen, Hit The Lights etc) and new (Some Kind Of Monster). This has riffage befitting of gods like Hetfeild and Hammet and drumming that only Lars Ulrich is capable of. The live tracks are exciting, fast and furious and energy sucking, just as any Metallica live set is. Damage Inc and Ride The Lightning are the best live of the live bunch, the editted version of Some Kind Of Monster is really not neccesary and no way near as good as the full song.
