Nickelback. Love or hate'em, they're one of the most successful bands of the 00's. Since their debut album Curb, to their latest outing Dark Horse, they've been a force in the music industry. Dark Horse is nothing new, in terms of music, but It shows Nickelback's raunchy side in the vain as previous hits Animals and Figured You Out. Of course, the occasional ballad is there as well, such as I'd Come For You and Never Gonna Be Alone. The sound is tight. Produced by Mutt Lange of AC/DC and Def Leppard fame, Dark Horse is long on raunchy, innuendo-filled lyrics and crunchy, down-tuned riffs, with pounding bass lines and thundering drums, but short on earnesty. But, songs like Gotta Be Somebody and If Today Was Your Last Day fill this gap to the extent that It's not all just a guy's night out. I like the drumming on the record. Daniel Adair is an astounding drummer, showing on tracks like Something In Your Mouth and Next Go Round. There are guitar solos as well. Not on every track, but enough to keep you interested. In my own opinion, they're pretty good solos, not outstanding, but good. Also, I must add, as a fan of Chad's voice, he stands out among other bands in the genre.

The lyrics. What can I say? How deeper can you explain what Something In Your Mouth's about? Or what Shakin' Hands mean? Even songs like If Today Was Your Last Day and Just To Get High don't have a hidden meaning. It's pretty obvious what Chad's trying to say. But it works. Chad's lyrics might not be the best, but they convey what he wants to say in a clever manner. The music goes well with the lyrics, that's one thing I like. The music matches the attitude and feeling of the lyrics very nicely. Well done. Some people may not like Chad Kroger's voice, but he knows how to use it. I personally like it, and It sticks out among others.

Dark Horse, if you compare it with another band of the same genre, would probably be even. It's nothing new, but as I said before, it keeps you interested enough that you won't get bored. Fans of their more lighter stuff will be pleased, but the harder material reigns. I loved the tracks Just To Get High, If Today Was Your Last Day and This Afternoon. Those were good tracks. The bass lines weren't creative though, just following the rhythm guitar, but it doesn't affect the music. If this album were stolen or lost, I'd probably wait to buy it again, but I would buy it. Sometime or later.
