Orchid: Heretic

Sound — 3
Orchid's previous full length, "Capricorn", was one of the biggest head turners of 2011. With both the sound and quality of a lost Sabbath disc, nobody was in any doubt as to Orchid's future in the metal world. Orchid thrived because their songs were based around one riff, and that riff was glorious. In the title track, the riff is an inferior "Smells Like Teen Spirit" knockoff that, while engaging just enough for say, an outro, is completely unable to handle an entire song. The monotonous style of Orchid needs a strong riff, and this song does NOT have that. Just a boring one. There's a wah-laden psychedelic riff in there somewhere, but its not worth your time getting to it. The drum sound is also crap. It sounds like a fake digital version, and as such is shamefully buried in the mix, especially noticeable compared to "Capricorn" side by side. Rubbish.

The vocals sound unenthusiastic. With so little to work with, no performer would be able to do a good job, but at least during the choruses he wakes up. Maybe if the riffs were more interesting, or had the beat or "Capricorn" there'd be something to get enthused about. But there's nothing here. I give this a 5 because I feel that solo, the vocals would be worth that. With the music combined, it feels like a 3.

Overall Impression — 4
This album feels like a free download. But it isn't available to download at all even though its right there on their Bandcamp page. To cap it off, it kills the best track off "Capricorn", he who walks alone, with the god-awful "Heretic" mix. Check out "Capricorn". Forget "Heretic".
