Whenever you think of Paul McCartney, you normally think of the grandiose sound the Beatles had during Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, or Abbey Road, right? Or maybe you think of all of those spectacular songs he did with Wings? Well this album is entirely different...because it's some weird electronica album. Now I know that musicians like to change the way their music sounds. The Beatles did, Led Zeppelin did, Metallica did...the list goes on. But the change Paul McCartney's music goes through in Liverpool Sound Collage is entirely changing his gameplan. No longer do we hear pianos, pop-inspired guitar riffs, or the majestic sound of Paul McCartney's voice. Instead, we get some industrial music that would sound better on a Nine Inch Nails album. I will admit that the opening track, "Plastic Beetle" (an obvious nod to his former band), is actually very good. While it does sound out of place in comparison to other McCartney songs such as "Live And Let Die" or "Band On The Run", "Plastic Beetle" does hold up very well and is possibly the best song on the album. It's a shame that the other four songs can't keep the album afloat. The worst songs on the album, hands down, are "Peter Blake 2000", "Real Gone Dub Made In Manifest In The Vortex Of The Eternal Now", and "Made Up", which are the quintessential farting-in-a-microphone songs found on this album. Even worse is that "Peter Blake" and "Real Gone Dub" are almost SEVENTEEN MINUTES LONG. Not to mention "Made Up" is a whopping twelve minutes long--not nearly as bad as the previous two, but still too long. All of this might have been a little more forgiving if the songs were two, three, maybe even four minutes long. But forty-six minutes for three bad songs is absolutely too much to handle. Period.

There are no, I repeat, NO lyrics on this album at all--unless you count the sound of random people talking throughout some of the songs, all of which are unbearable gibberish. In fact, they sound like pure white noise on a TV. It absolutely begs the question of why McCartney, the legendary lyricist that he is, would deprive himself of writing any lyrics at all.

To wrap it up, this album is just plain awful. With the exception of "Plastic Beetle", none of the other songs are worth mentioning. They are stupid, horrible, and just plain forgettable. And it's such a shame that I am saying this about an album by Paul McCartney, a man whose legacy was and remains unrivaled.
