Slipknot: All Hope Is Gone
1

Sound — 9
Now, the good news. The excited violence of their debut is (in-part) back: 'Vendetta' is pure Pantera strut, 'This Cold Black' is a riot of hate driven by Joey Jordison's blastbeats, leaving these two songs among the finest in their canon. Lead single 'Psychosocial' is the perfect marriage of light and shade, but the title track astounds most: gloriously sludgy and frantically light-fingered at the same time, it's a relentless assault which confirms that, when their backs are against the wall, Slipknot can hew stunning riffs from the heaviest metal. But by letting their off-beat creativity fester, Slipknot have missed their chance to finally silence the doubters; confusing considering they conquered the world without a shred of compromise. No-one's been scared of them since last century, but 'Vol 3' shocked because it was so unexpected. They needed to up their innovating significantly but haven't, leaving 'All Hope Is Gone' above-average. And for a band used to being loved or hated, the middle ground can't be where they aimed for.

Lyrics — 10
try not to shiver when Corey Taylor growls Let me watch you as you sleep - 'Snuff' emotes so hard it recalls post-Bizkit mopers Staind. The lyrics are well written and show Corey's skills as a singer. Corey's skills however are shown off more when he sings 'Bother' or 'Through the Glass' with his other band 'Stone Sour'.

Overall Impression — 8
f--k it all, f--k this world, f--k everything that you stand for spat Slipknot in 1999 on 'Surfacing', helping them become an international phenomenon in the process. Nearly a decade on they're one of the most recognisable bands on the planet through, the cynics say, a combination of shock marketing and exploiting the f--k-you-I-won't-tidy-my-bedroom angst dollar, but beneath the masks lies an insatiable desire to innovate musically. 'Iowa' (2001) added cold, bold tinges of black and doom metal to the scorched-earth template of their debut; the brutality of 'Vol 3 (The Subliminal Verses)' was so garlanded with dark ambience and shards of melody it prompted even the sniffiest of detractors into grudging respect.Yet while their antics have, perversely, allowed Slipknot to quietly become one of the most interesting bands operating on such a commercial level (their two platinum and one double-platinum records sit on a rotting mantelpiece next to their Grammy), 'All Hope Is Gone' is a mis-step, albeit not a fatal one. The catchier elements of 'Vol 3' felt brave while retaining their trademark filth, but the FM choruses of 'Butcher's Hook' and 'Wherein Lies Continue' jar next to Mick Thomson and Jim Root's gunshot guitars. And though 'Gehenna' is an attempt at unsettling atmospherica.

Slipknot Blows, If You Want Real Metal, Listen To Origin, Or Necrophagist. Not This Sellout Garbage.

This Album sucks! Overrated Sellout Garbage! I would call it cheesy, experimental, overdrummed, Deathpopmusic. This sounds even worse than 90% of the Metalcoregarbage! Final Verdict: 2 Points!

mhm right no melody, just cookie monster vocals and blast beats with no variation or difference between songs. really, some of us dont give a shit with what "real metal" is and we enjoy the music that is presented.

agreed! but i dont know about the jewish religion but to christians it means hell. the reason they call it gehenna is because back in jerusalem on the outskirts of the city the was a big pit with fire were everyone put there waste like trash and such, and thats also where they threw the dead bodies that werent worthy enough for a burial.

Shit album. But with all the 'hardcore', 'baby-eating' 'metalheads' on this site, I really shouldn't say that.

Im sorry, but your both wrong. Look in history...Gehenna was actually a great big furnace, where they put their garbage. It was outside the city wall, and they kept all the garbage and whatnot ablaze as a way of taking care of their garbage problem. And when people were said not to deserve a proper burial, they would sometimes be thrown over this wall. That is what jesus meant when people would be thrown into gehenna...that it symbolized everlasting destruction, since something that was thrown into gehenna would never be recovered. It had nothing to do with hell, since the greek translation for hell was always just the common grave of mankind.

Slipknot is one of the most overrated bands ever, What happened to the days before corey taylor, where they would open for primus and get booed off the stage for being to heavy and strange, that was where they should of stayed. I hate it when my favriote unmainstream bands become so mainstream i can't walk down street without seeing a stupid slipknot maggot.

Does any find a similarity between this and the black album. Ballads, clean singing. Sounds like all you slipknot fans should be ready for a (Load) piece of crap in the coming years.

+ 100000 Kiss rule over Slipknot anyday

I have to say this is possibly the worst metal album I heard in all of 2008. Psychosocial struck me as an amazing song so I thought I would listen to the rest... I cant comprehend how they managed to right 14 songs that blow incredibly large amounts of ass, yet have a song like Psychosocial which is down right awesome. Face it, nothing on this album is particularly memorable or interesting aside from psychosocial.

actually vabkle92 and those prior before gehenna became a furnace and garbage mound it was the sight of extremely violent and disturbing pagan and early extreme cult rituals invovling the sarcrifice of young virgin children to a god of fire, no joking. its also refered to as an alternative hell in jewish faith.
