Stereophonics: Performance And Cocktails

Sound — 9
Performance And Cocktails, a good mix in life and in music, as this album demonstrates. Welsh rockers Stereophonics have got their winning formula, and have had it since 'Word Gets Around', and they have barely changed it right up until the most recent album 'Language, Sex, Violence, Other? '. This is both good and bad, the good part is, their winning formula is fantastic, with the lead singers gruff voice poking its head over the top of a wall of cascading, foot stomping guitar riffs. It also means that they haven't had the opportunity to ruin it with something different. The bad side is that they haven't been able to blossom into something new and exciting. But still, this album offers some of the best Stereo' songs about, kicking off with 'Roll Up And Shine' followed immediately by the fantasticly catchy and upbeat 'The Bartender and the Thief'. there's also the laid back sounds of 'Pick A Part That's New' and the atmospheric "Just Lookin'."

Lead singer Kelly Jones has an extrememly unique voice, very gruff and could even be described as slightly tortured. The lyrics I will admit are not spectacular, not bad in any way, but really nothing that makes you sit up and think. There are some gems though, 'Just Lookin'' should not be taken at face value and the lyrics can make you think. Also 'The Bartender and The Thief' is a gem, not for the actual lyrics, but for the way they're sung, with such fun and 'upbeatness'.

Overall Impression — 8
Definately not the best that the Stereophonics have to offer, but that isn't an insult mind. With the fantastic quality of 'Word gets Around' it would be hard to follow it up with anything, and I don't think they have, not even with 'Language, Sex, Violence, Other?' Still, this album is better than 'L, S, V, O? ' and has one of the best tracks, 'The Bartender And The Thief', on it. Highly reccomended, but still not as good as 'Word Gets Around'.
