Sumatra presents the listener with a wonderful fusion of technical death metal, elements of deathcore and certain moments that have an appropriately placed metalcore flair. If one was forced to pick the tracks that have the highest technical proficiency Rescue From Enslaving, Heliocratic Infinity, Regeneration and Last Haven of God would probably be the ones to choose. The sweeping in Rescue From Enslaving is a fantastic break to the harsh vocals and the way the song fades out with dual-guitar tremolo picking is really great. Earth of Corpses is probably the track with the more deathcore elements, the good kind that die-hard death metal fans can also enjoy it's heavy on breakdowns and lower growls. Tracks like Final Repentance, Stillborn Savior and Splinters of Blindness have a more melodic twist, with the two latter ones featuring extremely well played out clean vocals. Some of the riffs verge more on metalcore especially in Final Repentance which even contains a pretty, let's say emotional solo towards the end which contrasts the other heavy dynamics in the song. Dusk, Pacification and Sunrise are instrumentals which show great guitar work and are not really within the same genre found throughout the album, great to listen to.
Lyrics — 8
Since they are unsigned band I could not find the lyrics to the songs, however the vocals themselves can be discussed. The band has two singers, one which focuses on the shouts and deeper ones and the other who contributes the highs as well as lows in some other moments. You end up with many moments where the voices of these vocalists are layered seamlessly and complement the strong tone of the instruments perfectly. The clean vocals provided by the lead guitarist are especially impressive and are a nice surprise overall. The low growls sound like an angry grizzly bear and the highs are evil sounding, no complaints.
Overall Impression — 10
I am perfectly aware that I sound biased throughout this entire review but this band is just such a REFRESHING blend of genres which are becoming ever-more stagnant. Of course, I am talking about the metalcore/deathcore scene that is pumping out more and more lifeless, generic and uninspired clones every day. The guitar/bass work is really quite impeccable in this album, there wasn't really a moment where I was disappointed, the drums make frequent use of double-bass runs which gives everything the desired aggressive tone and the vocals are almost scary. I advise anyone with a vague interest in death metal, metalcore and deathcore to give this album a listen because you'll be positively surprised.
