Symphony X: The Odyssey

Sound — 10
Michael Romeo's brilliant orchestration and blazing guitar solos are the key elements in this album. I love the way this band always has a hint of classical music in their songs.

Lyrics — 10
The lyrics may seem subliminal to some, but if you know beforehand what they are about, you will understand the lyrics better. The album title, The Odyssey, as well as the album art, suggest a mythological theme. Many of the songs, including the title song, which is in fact a 24 minute, seven part suite, are based on Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. Allen's vocal abilities are amazing. His growls can make Pantera sound like Good Charlotte. His melodic singing could put any American Idol contestant into a state of insanity. Cross his growling with his melodic singing, and you have something that sounds like Iron Maiden on steroids.

Overall Impression — 10
This is one of the top progressive metal bands. Recommended to fans of Dream Theater and Yngwie Malmsteen. I would highly recommend buying this album, and would definately buy it again, were it stolen.
