System of a Down: Mezmerize

Sound — 8
This is the newly awaited album from System of a Down. This album has had quite a lot of hype following it because of the two previous albums especially. The great Toxicity and very enjoyable Steal This Album. I feel their new album is a lot more experimental with music in general. I have read a letter to the editor of a music magazine saying that this album is of a poor standard compared to their previous work. I believe this is a harsh way to look at it. This was the first System Of A Down album I purchased, and it was a very good introduction to the band for me. The single Byob is a classic anthem and is entertaining to say the least. The other songs follow that entertaining trend throughout. Such songs inlude "Violent Pornography" and "Old Skool Hollywood" which are classics in their own right as well. Overall this album's sound is unique unto itself. To compare it to their previous sound is pointless, because it is completely different.

Lyrics — 8
The lyrics are alot more simplistic than their previous, but very funny. The great thing about this album is that it is purely entertaining. It is funny, it rocks, and thought provoking at the same time. This therefore makes you laugh which is great when you might be in a bad mood, where this music is used to take out your anger. Again, to compare the lyrics of this album with previous is stupid. These lyrics are solely for entertainment e.g. "my cock is much bigger than yours, my cock can walk right through the door, with a feeling so pure" not Shakepeare, but it is certainly entertaining.

Overall Impression — 8
This album, using the bullet points for guidance, does not compare with other albums but in the good sense. It is experimental and totally unorthodox therefore unique and interesting to explore. The most impressive songs on the album are easily "Violent Pornography," "Byob" and "Old Skool Hollywood." I love this album because it is dumb fun and very entertaining. The only thing I find bad about it is it is not as powerful and soul gripping as previous albums, maybe that element they should not have gone away from. If this album was stolen from me, I would definitley go out and get it again, but perhaps wait for it to be a quid or two cheaper first. 14 quid for 11 songs on any album doesn't add up.
