Sound — 10
In my eyes this album was very appealing to most System fans I know. They use a new style of sound that is very different from most of their old stuff, but at the same time, they keep the stand-out effect. They have a sound that is distinct from any other band out there right now. This album has many songs that are extremely easier on the ears than some of their old very hardcore stuff. The styles that were very interesting to me were the way they use very different ways of putting their message out there: The government is evil. I have looked and saw that all of System's aspects have changed, one of the most apperant being not only Serj's style but his hair. When I watched BYOB I went "Woah!" There sound is different, but still keeps their old distinct ways.
Lyrics — 10
This album has definently developed a more mature and greatness in it's sound, especially the lyrics. I get the impression that they have tried to make their songs a bit more understandable. There old stuff was a bit odd, and this album basically showed that they aren't always on acid (just joking). The lyics also mix very well with the music. The song on this that I think has the best lyrical and musical mix is probably Sad Statue. It gives a very distinct message in the lyrics. Also shows very great guitar skills. They have definently improved on singing as well. They can hold notes way longer than old songs. I have noticed that Shavo has made a bigger role in this album, although I still think Serj has better talent in singing. They still have been improving over the years and this is definently something I can say without having to think twice: They have gotten way better at singing since Toxicity or their first album. Don't get me wrong, though, I still love the oldies as well.
Overall Impression — 10
01. Soldier Side - this song is very good to me, because it tells me a lot of what they think must be going on in the minds of the soldiers fighting out there right now 9/10. 02. BYOB - after being played on radio countless times, it has definently gotten old, but I still think the most apealing lyrics are "Why don't the presidents fight the war?" 8/10. 03. Revenga - doesn't make a very clear message but does show a lot of talent when it comes to guitar and other musical talent 10/10. 04. Cigaro - this song was pretty good at first then it got a bit too hardcore to listen to after listening to everything else 8/10. 05. Radio/Video - loved this song a lot. One of my favorites and definently liked the way it sped up in the end 10/10. 06. This Cocain Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song - very weird, to say the least. Very fast and very easy to compare to "Sugar." Love it because it did remind me of Sugar 10/10. 07. Violent Pornography - I like this because this is the reason I don't watch T. V. very much anymore. All there is is tasteless violence and porn 10/10. 08. Question! - loved this because it states the clear message: "When will society actually improve?" Good guitar, outstanding drums, and great singing 10/10. 09. Sad Statue - best song on the album, in short. Very clear on the statement, and good melody. Excellent speed guitars and good, strong sounding drums and vocals 11/10. 10. Old School Hollywood - on every album they have "that talking song," as a buddy of mine likes to call it. Good song and it kind of puts me under the hot 100 degree song playing baseball when I listen. Kind of puts a picture in my head of Shavo wiping his brow with a mit and singing. Weird, but strong and good guitar 9/10. 11. Lost In Hollywood - good statement. The industry will fuck you over. They will say you are great and butter you up and then they will just make you change what you love to do most. Good strong lyrics. Shavo makes a very big statement in this song. Love it 10.5/10. I hate the way they have changed their style slightly but I love the way that they still have the strong sound. I love the musical and lyrical sound as well, and if it were stolen, I would personally chase the man who took it and club him in the head and get it back.
