System of a Down: Mezmerize

Sound — 10
Inspired and energetic. I love the playful nature they bring to their writing. They certainly do not take themselves too seriously but manage to produce some of the most original and relelvant metal around.

Lyrics — 8
They can be hard to follow. I remember reading how their lyrics are not limited to one topic/issue per song. With this said, they work well and set a tone much better than they make a point.

Overall Impression — 10
At least as strong as their last effort. I love Byob, which is a crazy and thought provoking take on the invasion of Iraq (as far as I can tell). The songs are mostly on the short side, but packed so full of tone, texture, and transitions that they "feel" longer. My one criticism is that their music doesn't have much "color," meaning lacks rich instrumental tonality. However, I love the album as this is their signature sound. Very strong effort.
