The Raveonettes: Chain Gang Of Love

Sound — 10
The Raveonettes are one of the better bands around now, with their huge sound and catchy riffs. The Raveonettes employ a fuzzed out guitar throughout the album which is very catchy, and yet at the sae time the bass, drums and other assorted effects can be easily heard through the guitar sound. There are some very unique and quite good songs on this album, of which "Chain Gang Of Love" is the best by far with its interesting cricket sounds in the intro to its wavering guitar and soaring lyrics. This alternative rock sound is amazing, and I've never heard anything quite like it. This music is very original in its use of noise for the sake of noise, and as a measure of its catchy riffs it is being used in a commercial for jeans, which although selling out a little bit it distributes this music to the masses.

The lyrics on Chain Gang Of Love are very hip and original, they range from songs about sex and love to describing a trip to NY. The lyrics are upbeat and are relevant to the music since the music in general is upbeat and pumps you up. The vocalist has a great voice for this type of music, being not as gritty as the Strokes or Jack White, yet not as melodic as some. Overall the lyrics are great and while not poetry are very catchy and work well with the guitar sound that they have going.

Overall Impression — 10
This album is a great debut for the band, and while not acheiving huge commercial success, set them up for follow up works. The album is on par with The White Stripes latest work, and the Strokes debut, which are also excellent albums. The reason this album is as good as the other two mentioned is its originality, the layout and sound of the songs sounds nothing like the manufactured tried and true singles that you hear now a day on rock radio, but they come strait from the heart and the dirty guitar backs up this feeling with unmatched intensity. Remember, The Love Gang and the title track are the best song because they are hard rocking songs with a huge sound which is combined with great lyrics. My recommendation is sample the title track on itunes or some similar program and if you like it go out and buy this cd because you either love it or hate it.
