Sound: Vashti Bunyan's sole album was recorded in 1970, and never was noticed by the mainstream. Nick Drake fans would enjoy this album very much, being it was produced by Nick Drake's producer (joe Boyd) and the string arrangements were by Robert Kirby, Nick Drake's college friend who did his album strings too. Vashit's music is very supplicate, and very soft, but covers a wide range of emotions and ideas on one album. She plays a very mellow acoustic or classical guitar, backed usually by a string quartet, flute, and piano. Her high soprano vocals and creative lyricism completes the musicality completely. // 9

Lyrics: As I said, her lyricism is creative (maybe not the most creative, but above average), and her high voice creates an atmosphere reminiscent of Nick Drake. Her music seems to take you back in time, or to your uncertain future, and sometimes just fantasy places you've dreamed of. Her voice is the perfect vehicle, and neither the lyrics, vocals, or music is overbearing. The re-issued album (c.2001) contains four tracks recorded between 1966-1969 that are more poppish than folky, but the lyrics are still just as new. // 9

Overall Impression: This album definitely deserved the re-issue, and is definitely worth buying if you're a Nick Drake/ Leonard Cohen fan. The album is subtle supplicate, and often very relaxing, and the thoughtfulness makes this a nostalgic trip to the future (if you can dig it). It's a fatastic album that is very well made. I would buy this again if it were stolen (the question that must be answered). I recommend it. // 9
