Velvet Revolver: Contraband

Sound — 8
The reunion of 3 of the members of Gunr N'Roses really got my attention, but the new group disappointing. The record was a metal/hard-rock set more or less. I expected some vintage "classic" rock feel to their music, but they are more like Audioslave than anyone else. There were one or two decent guitar solos by Slash. It's basically loud and hard hitting modern rock with a slightly nostalgic feeling of classic GN'R.

The lyrics were in context with the style, but they did not have much compared to GN'R, but then again, Axl Rose is not in this band. The chorus was sung many times more than they should have ("Fall To Pieces" for example) with too many new verses. The lyrics are original however and make the cut.

Overall Impression — 8
The album is definitely for curious GN'R fans or other classic rock listeners although they may be slightly disappointed like I was. About half the album are good songs while they other half are songs that will never be remembered.
