Sound: Von Hertzen Brothers are a progressive rock band from Finland and as the name tells it consist of three brothers Kie that was a member of a legendary finnish rock band Don Huonot is on the guitar, Mikko on vocals and guitar, and finally Jonne on the bass. After the brothers formed the band they got Mikko Kaakkurinniemi to play the drums and Juha Kuoppala to play the keybords. Their first record Experience that was relised back in 2001 didn't get allmost any coverage and most people where actually suprised that their follow up album Approach with it's single Let Thy Will Be Done got a lot of attention in the mainstream music media, and a it was also critically acclaimed. The record itself takes influences from old progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd and Kingston Wall to legends of heavy metal like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin yet it has still a fresh and interresting way to compine heavy rocking tracks like Let Thy Will Be Done and mellow lay back tracks like the ten minute opening for the record Disciple of the Sun. All around groovy riffing style and influences that Mikko got from the time he was living in india really make this album sound fresh, solid, and totally enjoyable. A perfect summer rock album wihtout being generic or repeative. Juha Kuoppala's keybord work is really great even without taking overtaking the guitars. The whole band works great together and because of that they have gotten a reputation as a great live band. In it's best the band can deliver allmost mystical sounding melodies and sound walls after mellowing down for i bit just to take you up again. // 10
Lyrics: The lyrics are mostly made by the singer songwriter Mikko Von Hertzen. He takes a lot of influence from his time in india to his compositions and to his lyrics and one person is clearly made an influence on him.
Mother Amma "the hugging saint". Through his lyrics Mikko usually has deep metaphores about the way of the world and it's ifluences on himself and other people. Somehow the whole album is full of allmost saintly praises and positivity. Thank good that it doesn't sound cheecy or irritating. Lyrics are sensitive enough that I don't think allmost anyone would be irritated about them but always there will be someone. Glad that I'm not one of them. // 8
Overall Impression: Mostly when people make music and get a record deal they have to chance something about their music but on this record the three brothers haven't compromised anything so they have been given the opportunity to make a album that they wanted. After the flop that their first album was they had problems to get a record deal because the big record companys liked it but didn't know how to market it. Gladly Dynasty Recordings gave them the chance just because they loved the album. So do I. This is one of the best albums that I've heard in the category of progressive rock. Just as Kingston Wall they are one of the most important finnish progressive rock bands ever, expecially right now because of the lack of progressive music in the music scene. If you have the opportunity to get your hands on this album, buy it! // 10
