Bought this from Guitar Center used for $177 which is a pretty fair price for this guitar. Its neck is maple with a rosewood fretboard, if you like the thinner headstock style like a Fender (not a Fender style headstock, though) this guitar has it instead of the bulky v at the top, 24 frets, Dean pickups or whatever, and 3 way pickup switch with 2 pickups knobs and a master tone. The tuners are wonderful and hold tune greatly! Back to the neck, it feels cheap but it's real fast and great for soloing. The string-through body is awesome
Sound — 8
I don't know where people get that this is only for thrash metal, I'm able to get sounds for any genre from it. The stock pickups aren't the greatest, but they get the job done! Personally I'd either switch to an active Duncan Mustaine Livewire or passive EMG HZ set of pickups. The neck pickup clean is perfect for something such as the clean intro to "...And Justice for All" by Metallica. Get some Ernie Ball Cobalt .10-.52s and this will be a mean sounding guitar! The pickups are kinda odd, if you left-hand mute the strings there will be a metallic noise. That may just be mine though.
Action, Fit & Finish — 10
When I got this I figured I'd have to immediately restring it and work on it a little bit. That wasn't the case, got it all tuned up and the action was perfect, set right above the frets and no buzzing surprisingly. Some people claim that their graphic is coming off and how it's apparently just a sticker. Considering the fact that I've looked it over well there is not trace of a sticker nor is the graphic coming off. It must just be from them abusing their guitars. Neck wasn't bowed at all and all knobs were tight.
Reliability & Durability — 8
Get strap locks for this model! Its stock strap buttons are terrible if you move around a lot! Definitely bring a backup if you can for a gig because it's a 300 dollar guitar, anything can happen. Not necessarily saying anything will happen, there's just more possibilities. The finish will take some work to wear off, it's well done. Neatly painted and lots of detail put into it. Knobs, bridge, tuners, and switch are all in immaculate condition and you shouldn't have to worry about them failing.
Overall Impression — 9
I've played guitar for 7 months and bass for 12 months so I can tell what is and isn't a quality instrument. I'm way better at guitar so I ditched bass, but that's not relevant to this. The Dean Dave Mustaine VMNTX is perfect for Megadeth fans who want a V guitar with 24 frets and a cool Megadeth piece for a cheap price, if you don't want any of the Deans ESP Ltd makes a V-50 that's good as well, and any beginners. If this were stolen I'd buy a more expensive model such as the End Game one but for the money this is one of the best around!
