Sound — 10
The thin line style electric is designed to combine the resonant warmth of an acoustic with the performance characteristics of a solid body. The original 50's version of this design was a welcome addition; however, it still tended to be a bit weak in the attack and sustain department.

Reliability & Durability — 10
The single cutaway design shortens the exposed area of the neck and creates a more stable neck joint. In this situation, the shorter neck does not drain energy off the strings and you have better attack and sustain. The compact headstock design creates greater string bearing pressure at the nut for superior attack and sustain. The compact size reduces the tendency to resonate and steal energy off the string. Duncan Designed pickups insure a professional balance of tone, clarity, and power.

Action, Fit & Finish — 10
The Royale addresses the performance shortcomings of this great design. The sides and the center block are made from one piece of wood rather than two sides and the centerblock. This creates a more rigid structure to mount the neck, top and back into. The result is uncommon attack and sustain without sacrificing the rich full tone. More like a solid body with incredible tone and warmth or fullness.

Features — 10

I know this is a very old post, about 10 years, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway... I've been trying to confirm what make/model of pickups are on the RL1/RL-1. How do you know it has Duncan Design Pickups? It doesn't say so in the info at the Greg Bennett site (in The Vault). I believe this may be the wrong sales material. The RL3/RL-3 has the Crown Inlays, and the Ad material for the RL3/RL-3 also states that it has Duncan Design Pickups. The Ad material for the RL1/RL-1 just says Humbucker Pickups. RL-1 Info: RL-3 Info: a footnote, regarding, the title of the Ad material for the Royale Series at the Greg Bennett site, RL1, RL2, etc... But The Label on the inside of the guitar is "RL-1", "RL-2", etc... with a Dash. When searching for info, I have to do 2 searches, one for RL1 and one for RL-1.
In the description of the RL1 it says: The compact size reduces the tendency to resonate and steal energy from the string. pickups insure a professional balance of tone, clarity, and power. In the specs it just says Dual humbucker pickups. In the description of the RL2 there is no mention of Duncan Designed™ Pickups just Dual Humbuckers. I think the differnece between the RL1 and the the RL is that the RL1 indeed has Duncan Designed Hunbuckers and a bolt on neck whereas the RL2 has generic (no label) Humbuckers and a set neck
I really enjoy my RL-1 so thankful they went with bolt on neck and ducan design thank y'all. Kevin Nicks.
