I use a modded Dean From Hell, it has an original Floyd Rose, a Bill Lawrence L500XL, and a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the neck. I play everything from jazz to rock'n'roll to metal to death stuff. In short, this amp delivers. The Mesa tubes that were installed give the clean channel a pristine sparkly clean, and when cranked, a great Santana-esque tone. The crunch channel can get everything from blues to Lamb Of God stuff. The Ultra channel is just that. Ultra. Super hi gain, and wonderful thump and sound. It does every higain sound I need, and I have never needed to use a boost to get the buttery-smooth shredding tone. I love it, and I don't need any pedals anymore. It isn't noisy at all, at least with the Mesa tubes and my custom guitar

Overall Impression — 9
Perfect match to my playing style and guitar. I've been playing for 2 years, and I'm a metalhead to the core. it's perfect. If it was lost or stolen... I'd try to find another on eBay. She's kinda pricey new (1200), but it'd be worth it to me.

Reliability & Durability — 10
This thing has taken a stage dive from the top of a half-stack, and it stayed on and crunching. I messed up a tube from that 3-ft drop... but I have a Peavey center nearby, and they replaced the tubes for free. I would gig her without a backup, but that's just me. It's a Peavey... 'nuff said

I purchased this amp with Mesa 6L6s installed. 120 watts, 3 channels tube. Effects loop, switchable with included footswitch. It has a line out, but that's pretty much worthless. I gig regularly with the amp, and it has never let me down, and has never been too soft. I run this amp through a ValveKing 412 cab, and it's loud enough to break windows. I've actually done it and then I had to replace the windows haha it's loud enough. Needs a reverb unit, but I bolted one on, and it's great.

lol of course an ENGL kills the Peavey..... its also how many times as expensive? It's like trying to compare a Lamborghini to a Mustang.....the Lamborghini will always win, and it will likely always be 10x as expensive. You get what you pay for =)

They don't make it anymore. If you can find one though, look into it. I bought mine for $400, and it was a steal. Good amp for the money.

It would do the job. I play the same type of music, so I'd suggest a 5150 or 6505. Maybe a JCM 800 would be good for your type of music too.

j00 g3t br00t4lz t0nez from teh 4mp? Run 3 mt-2 m3t4l z0nes p3e4lz in fr0nt th3n j00 see tru3 br00talz. Seriously though, can't wait to get this head and ditch my distortion pedals. What cabs are you guys finding best with this head?

meh. i have one and if you don't play extremely heavily distorted black metal 100% of the time, don't get this because I'm convinced thats what it was built for. the natural clean tone is awful and gritty for my taste. plus, who doesn't install a spring reverb in a tube amp? a tube amp over $1000 might i add. the overdrive DOES sound really mean and surprisingly clear but i just don't find that its very versatile unless you have a billion pedals. i have quite a few but my sound isn't saturated with effects, and if you plan on playing even a few bars on the clean channel with this thing, you'll need to invest in a lot of reverb, chorus, noise suppressors, etc. overall a 3 out of 5....a generous 3. with that said, does anyone want to buy a Peavey Triple XXX Head? bahahahhahaha

Great amp! Extremely underrated!! If your looking for cabs I bought the XXX cab with it and am not a huge fan, so I picked up a Mesa Stiletto 4x12 and it screams. Anything with V30s will do this amp justice. (Vader, or maybe a Basson would be great too) Also changing the tubes to EL34's makes a world of difference.

if anyone could help me out with that, that would be great. I'm play in my first band and we are a thrash/melodic death metal style and i just don't know what kind of cab to purchase.

i picked one of these up at guitar center for 425 used but the cool grill was ripped of. What would be a good cab to purchase for this amp thats not to expensive?

Just picked one of these up for $435. It's @#$%^ing sick. Love it. Brootalz for days without a pedal. The clean channel isn't bad either.

Let me say that I own this amp and to the guy with the DSL. The X can do classic rock just fine all you have to do is turn the gain down. We do so many classic covers and this is the amp that I chose, and it delivers flawlessly. And to the guy with the 6505 for some reason that head sounded like a fart trying to squeeze out of a speaker cabinet. I mean no matter what you do to the eq on that amp it always sounds like it's missing the midrange.

SMK626 is a retard,,, you dont post a review on the day u get the amp, thts just ridiculous

Haha I was trying to read this review at school and the school corp blocked it cuz it has xxx in it ..i was like WTF?!?!?!
    schnibbel666
yeah i thought so too. but i decided to say it anyway and i think the xxx should be about 1000, whereas the engl is at about 1500. which makes latter a rather hi-mid-class head. i still consider them to be in the same league but that might be a mistake.

And one more thing, before I was using this I was using a TSL head and the peavey just sounds better and more articulate. And of course peavey's are very reliable which is another reason to choose peavey over marshall or boogie. The thing about the 6505 it was supposed to be the EVH signature sound, not even close lol. I had a chance to hear the new EVH 3 fender amp and it nailed it to the tone. But the 3rd channel on that amp sounded like the peavey 6505 high gain channel
