Seymour Duncan: Saturday Night Special

The Saturday Night Special is a fairly recent addition to Seymour Duncan's lineup, but as impressed as I am with it, I encourage others to look past the three-figure price tag and try one for themselves. Does it turn your guitar into the late-'70s arena-rock monster that it claims to? That's for you to decide.

The output levels are outstanding, way too much for the clean channel on my amp to still be clean. The highs and mids are a bit nasally and overwhealm the lows.

This is one of the best neck pickups you could put in the neck position if you want to have a PAF with more attitude and great PAF dynamics. It's really a medium powered pickup, not meant for down tuning or black metal.

The Little '59 for Neck Position basically sounds like a PAF. According to Seymour Duncan it is the single-coil-sized version of the SH-1 '59 model. The sound is very close to it's full-sized brother, however the Little '59 does have a little less bass.

Late-'50s, vintage-correct, humbucker sound. Warm and crystalline clean tones. Full and bright distorted tones. Smooth sustain. Classic appointments include plain enamel wire, long legged bottom plate, vintage single conductor cable and no logo. Compared to the SH-55 Seth Lover, the '59 has slightly more scooped mids and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance.

The hand ground Alnico 2 magnets and moderate windings (Heavy Formvar wire) yield a warm, sweet tone with more natural string vibration for great sustain. Players who get their distortion from the amp rather than the pickup love the APS-1. It allows them to back off the crunch and get beautiful clean tones with softer attack.
