In 1997, Adam Gontier, Neil Sanderson, and Brad Walst formed a new band Three Days Grace. Once in Toronto, the band became notified by local producer Gavin Brown. The band presented him material which they had created over the past few years. Brown and the band reworked the songs and produced a demo album, which they gave to EMI Music Publishing Canada. But the record label wanted to hear more material, so the band created the song "I Hate Everything About You," which attracted the interest of several record labels.
Finally, Jive Records signed them and Three Days Grace moved to a studio in Long View Farm, North Brookfield, Massachusetts to record their debut album.

-Adam Gontier stated that he used an acoustic guitar for the main riff of the song. The band recorded this guitar part when they were doing demos for the song. They liked that riff and the way it sounded on the acoustic guitar. So they just used the guitar line from the demo on the final version of the song.

But in the official video, Adam Gontier used **Gibson SG Special**. Possibly, this guitar was used for the recording too, as he used this guitar and Gibson Les Paul during these years.
